"B-D-F# (Why does B minor have an F#? Seems to be the only chord that doesn't fit into C Major, or any of the modes for C Major)" Because it's NOT IN THE KEY OF C!!! See above about harmonizing the C major scale....

"But it's like asking why does the F Major scale have a Bb. This might become a little more clear if you start studying the Circle of Fifths. " Or even more clear if you start at the beginning. What IS a major scale? (Hint- you gotta know the arrangement of whole steps and half steps that make a major scale). Then it's REAL easy- Start at F natural, and apply the whole-step/half-step forumula, and make sure you use each letter name only one time. That tells you that you need a half-step after A, and because you've arleady used the letter A, you gotta call it Bb.

"But keep in mind that's it's simpler than it looks." Yeah, it is. But you gotta start at the beginning, and not jump around too much.
