Has anybody read through the 3-page ad in Bass Player's August (Les Claypool) issue? It's on page 91. Outrageous claims, stupid assumptions, and immature/condescending language abound. If you haven't, here are some choice nuggets:
- "if you've ever dreamed of becoming the kind of bass player who scares other musicians with your skills...this will be the most exciting message you ever read."
- [speaking about the author]: "Rex Hull is one of the FEW veterans of the professional music scene who still makes himself available for teaching...opening for major acts like the L.A. Guns...and scoring movie soundtracks...for big bucks (his last movie contract was for a cool five grand)...How good is he? Forget it...the only way to lure him back onstage is to shell out his Cadillac fees."
- "Learn this stuff...and youl be the center of the universe, literally overnight..." Yeah, right.
- "...you have never been this close to a real pro." Oh, yes, I have been. It is quite insulting to make that assumption.
- "It's all genuine shortcuts..." This is the kind of deep, meaningful instruction every serious musician is looking for - shortcuts.
- "Getting up onstage and blowing away the crowd (and your fellow musicians) is one of the most blissed-out experiences you could ever have. It's (almost) better than sex..."
I have no interest in "blowing away" or "scaring" my fellow musicians. Playing music, when it "clicks", is the ultimate feeling. It's not about scaring anybody. On the contrary, it's about community, connection, expression, and developing your abilities.
The system includes a TAB workbook that "makes everything super-simple and easy...This is the kind of mastery working bass players KILL to learn."
I'm sure working pros would kill for a TAB shortcut workbook. Yeah, right. I know how to read notation, dimwit. I got there with hard work, and years of practice. But it's so worth it.
Oh, I'm sure if Jeff Berlin read this ad, he would either laugh, shake his head in utter disbelief, or even cry....maybe all of those during the course of reading all 3 pages of it.
So, has anybody tried it? Did it make you the best player on your local scene THE VERY FIRST NIGHT you watched it (as the ad boldly claims)? Did the experience of "scaring" other musicians feel better than sex?
I don't know who Rex Hull or Mike O'Leary (the "Prez" of OHP music, and alleged author of the ad) are. But, I think this ad talks down to its readers in a very bad way. Also, many statements are flat out wrong, outrageous, or laughable due to being truly pathetic.
What do you guys think?
