Melodic Rock Bass -- Which Bands ??

Sign in to disble this ad
I need to move out of transcribing Arctic monkeys bass lines , and something more melodic and superior , and which would help me grow . I'm gonna throw in a couple of good examples of songs which kinda mimic the kinda bass lines I wanna learn from , see if you guys can help me out by suggesting bands which follow this kinda melodic supportive bass style .

I'm looking for more of a Blues-Rock style of music , I'm guessing most bands who adopt this sort of music include a lot of that sort of stuff .

Cheers , and thanks in advance to everyone who tries to help me out here .

I'd recommend Coheed and Cambria, an amazing bass player, unfortunately not the Blues/Rock your after however.

Some of Deep Purple's stuff is surprisingly melodic (and sometimes hard) to play (in terms of rock music)- Machine Head is my personal favorite album, though i like any of them in which Roger Glover was the bassist- just look up Highway Star or Space Truckin'- good stuff.

when ever someone asks for melodic rock, esp. bluesy rock, I always think of John Paul Jones of Led Zepplin.

Try going old school and listen to the masters and originators of the melodic style:

James Jamerson on many Motown hits (here with Marvin Gaye): http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y9KC7uhMY9s

Paul McCartney w/ The Beatles: http://youtube.com/watch?v=wBe85UKa1GQ

John Entwhistle w/ The Who: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_1RqyNdzbE

Jack Bruce w/ Cream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTA9PVO-lbo

Jack Casady w/ Jefferson Airplane: http://youtube.com/watch?v=InZS5jQTSvc
and Hot Tuna: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n01OWoThFN8 (sound on this one is awful).

and Phil Lesh W/ Grateful Dead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPNgjA4i6gM

These are all a great place to start in the blues/rock vein, these guys will keep you busy for quite awhile and if you learn and understand what they're doing you can apply it to whatever. After that you can start getting into the progressive and jazz guys.
