Whats a good scale(s) for heavy metal?

Something not so happy sounding.

If it's any indication as to what I like, I do like the egyptian scale, hirojoshi, and i can do the Dim7 arpeggio pretty well.

Pentatonic minor. Minor scales in general.

Also, I believe Number of the Beast was written in a major scale, at least I heard.

Great, avoid the major then.

IMO, Number of the Beast is one of THE WORST Iron Maiden songs ever.

Thanks for the responses, though.

666 rule, most maiden songs arent really that heavy and angry anyways but they can still rock while having their own sound.

Iron Maiden has a lot of songs that would count more as prog rock.

Number is definately not my favorite Maiden song, but it's still a classic.

In the diatonic modes check out the Phrygian and Locrian modes.

In modes based on E:a) phrygian E F G A B C D
b) locrian E F G A Bb C D

You sure can make some good riffs based on those scales.

It wouldn't hurt to be familiar with the blues scale too.

Check out whole tone scales, they have a really off and dissonant feel to them.
