One of the music stores in Winnipeg has the MI (Musician's Institute) bass series of instruction books.
Is anyone familiar with these? Any reviews?

they are a great resource in my opinion , i dont tend to use them for scales or chords , but the exercises and the methods of practice inside are excellent.
