Michael Manring Clinic... What To Expect?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, what's going on guys? Just wondering if anybody has ever attended any particular event similar to this, or is perhaps attending this one. I saw it advertised, with a $40 pricetag for the clinic and the concert. Was wondering if anyone knows what he'll be teaching or discussing, and if it's worth it. I'm a big fan of his, so regardless I'll most likely be making the trip to see his 7 pm performance, but his clinic is beginning at 2 pm. I'm a 7-string bassist, big into tapping and experimental finger styles. Thanks!

I've been to one of his clinics and one of his shows before. $40 seems rather high, but I would pay it to see him play again.

What did he discuss in the clinic? That's essentially what I'm looking to find out about.

This was a long time ago mind you. But IIRC he covered how he uses the eBow, how to slide a harmonic, how he uses his detuners, how and why he had Zon build his hyperbass and of course how awesome SWR amps were.

There was other stuff I can't recall off the top of my head. I was enthralled the whole time. Since you are "big into tapping and experimental finger styles" I would NOT miss it. I don't know of any bassist more experimental. Just watching him up close is a lesson and a half.

When I went there was a free clinic, then a 2-3 hour masterclass.
The clinic was just him playing his stuff, which was amazing to see from so close.
At the masterclass he tried to explain his philosophy of the instrument. Then he deconstructed a small piece of his music for us and helped us learn it step by step.
After that he demonstrated the benefits and uses of detuning to alter the feeling a song can bring out.
Basically it was a lesson on demand. He developped on our questions.
I found it mindblowing for the most part, as his concepts are very different from what we're used to and go much further.

To top it all M. Manring is a gentleman, polite and humble. I really recommend going even if you play a completely different style from his. I don't think anyone plays like him anyway.

Mike thinks outside the bun for sure. I have seen him in clinics 4 times and just blown
away by his creativity and technical proweress. He also burns on Jazz standards.
$40 is well worth it to me.

Well worth the 40 bucks, I was not really familiar when I saw his clinic at Bass Emporium and was very impressed.

Thanks for all the fantastic responses, guys. I'm seeing the rap group Odd Future on saturday night, which is going to be insane, so I was debating on passing on seeing Manring on sunday. However, now I'm even less likely to miss it.

Yeah. Manring is a mad-man on the bass. Not a mad-man like cuckoo. But a mad-man like he's from outerspace with his technique and musicianship. I attended a Manring clinic about 10 years ago and walked away amazed. Go!

I saw him do one about geez at least 10 years ago, so you know he has it down, he has been doing these for a long time, he will deliver.

When I saw him he did basically what everyone else has said, talked about his approach, his tunings, played a lot of his stuff and explained his hyperbass.

One *really* cool thing he did was his Hyper bass can do quad stereo, with 4 outputs, so he had a rig with speakers in all the 4 corners of the room and played a song with each output going to a different speaker and went bananas. It was awesome, total full bass surround sound freak-out.

Very likely it is not going to be "On a C minor chord I play..." kinda clinic, he may get into that, he certainly can explain all that stuff (he took lessons from Jaco at one point) but it is probably going to be more about art and expression than any specific note choices I would guess.

But it is really inspiring to sit 5 feet from someone like that and watch him do his thing.

Northstar Music in Plaistow, NH
7-9pm
He's doing a whole weekend with Jim Stinnett called the "Manring Workout" up in Candia...so the concert is a bonus! Couldn't make the clinic so this will be great for my daughter!
