So my jazzband is playing this tune and well obviously Its got alot of bass in it. I'm doing better than I thought with it but as I play over the chords I'm having a little trouble getting that mingus vibe.
The way he plays is kind of almost raunchy or dirty its hard to describe.
If you could throw up any more suggestions on how to sound a little more mingusish that would be great.
Maybe a little background will help.

I think it's very safe to guess that Mingus was using this piece to vent his rage and mock Faubus.
You should also check out Mingus's book "Beneath the Underdog". It has some pretty good insight to his dealings with racial issues and how this influenced his music.
As for the tune, I would suggest listening to a recording of it an transcribing what Mingus plays.
