edit: this is not when playing classical or jazz or funk, more indie-esque... if that makes a difference.
Check out a theory book on modes. Good stuff to be acquainted with.

The same diatonic collection of notes can be played so as to imply seven different scales.

And that's a really good thing to 'shed. Gets you away from finger patterns, and more in touch with the fingerboard.

I read that Debussy described his approach to composition in a similar way: push down the piano keys you want to hear, and leave the rest alone.

a) do whatever you want, it's (indie) rock n' roll (or classical, or jazz, or funk)

b) the root note is sort of like home-base & everything else you play relates to it. If you hit A and then slide up to C major and play consistently in C major after that, you're probably no longer playing in A minor.

It's sort of like saying "well the band is playing in blue, but I decide to slide up to purple" - is it wrong? of course not, but it's not blue anymore.

FWIW major scales are more "natural" than minor scales (read: from a physics point of view), but I'm sure nobody would want to hear about that, so I'll leave it alone.

hm..

I'm pretty sure someone already talked about it before but honestly speaking, decision is up to you. as long as you can play well, who's going to argue with that?

C - E7 - Am

Did you feel that pull from E7 - Am? Or was it a myth?
