a modal question

Ok, so I was practicing the circle of fifths today. I tried creating a lick in C maj that I would play in every key in the order of the circle of 5ths.

However, it seemed to me that my lick was based in the Dorian mode. This was pretty interesting to me because I have been trying to increase my knowledge of the modes, rather than wandering for cool notes.

So I decide to go with it, and to practice my apparently modal lick, I figured I'd make a track of each ii chord in the circle of fifths to play behind the lick, for ear training I guess.

But when I played along to the track, the 2nd would seem out of key at times.

Why is this?

the notes in the my lick were: C A D F G ...if that helps any

tabbed out it would be

G-------------7--5--------
D----3p2-----------3-3-x5
A----------5---------------
E--------------------------
Am I correct in thinking that this implies a Dm7 ?

Any help is welcome

edit: no B

It look like a standard Dm7 lick to me. BUt I would see it more like Aeolyan. No B on the TAB by the way.

Why not just drop saying mode and just say its a Dmi11 lick those are the notes your using. What you were thinking when coming up with it is one thing, but what it boils down to is a Dmi lick.

If you changed the F to F# it would be more of a C major lick emphasizing the color tones of 9, #11, 13. The F is why it works better for Dmi and not Cmaj IMO of course.
