what is everyone's felling on Jaco's Modern Electric Bass book and video. I have just picked both up and was considering following the lessons and such in the book. There is a lot of really hard stuff in there and i was wondering how people felt about the book and the way it intructs the reader.

Hard book IMO. Lots of neat stuff in there though; nice exercises and such.

I am curious. What language in the book are you unfamiliar with?

Me Too. The book is keyed to the DVD, so if you watch it and read the book along with it things should be clear.

It's a great vid, I looked the book over quite a while ago but I haven't ever had a copy. I imagine it's just as good.

well i just don't know what some of the things mean like when they are describing scales for example, they have a lot of R-W-W-H-W-W-W-H
and talking about halfsteps and steps in scales and i don't know what they mean

R = Root
W = Whole Step
H = Half Step

I saw that video once when I was getting into playing jazz and found it very helpful.

one of the most valuable lessons is actually when Jaco says "gimme a gig!"

in other words: the greatest, most talented musician to ever play the bass couldn't even get a gig because of his unreliability and attitude problems due to mental illness & substance abuse

you can be the greatest talent out there but unless you take care of yourself it can all count for nothing

As the kids say, "word".

I have many musician friends who are very talented but due to being equally flaky, can't seem to hold down a gig - whether that gig be with a band or a typical 9 to 5.

No worries. Everyone has the moments when things just don't make sense - even simple things. That DVD has a ton of really cool and challenging exercises and the interview is pretty nice too. If you have any appreciation for who Jaco was or who Jerry Jemmott is, watching the two of them sit there an chat bass is pretty nice.

If you don't know who either of them are - it's worthwhile to get to know their work.
