Motown Fake Book

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this so moderators feel free to move this.

I was wondering if there were any Motown Fake Books that you could recommend. We're starting a 60's soul revue and all the band members need some charts to work from. Even if there is a book that is R&B and soul in general would be great since we'll be playing Stax and others too. Any leads would be appreciated.

I do have SITSOM and I've wore it out really well.

Thanks in advance,
Ara

Motown "Bass Books".

Hal Leonard: "Motown Bass Classics"
Dave Rubin: "Motown Bass (Signature Licks)"
I don't know what they're like, I don't have them.

I do own:

"Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson" by Alan Slutksy
"The Funkmasters-the Great James Brown Rhythm Sections" by Alan Slutsky
"What Duck Dunn" by Tim Tindal

These three cover a wide spectrum of R&B/Funk/Soul from Motown, James Brown and Staxx during a very fruitful musical period. Good transcriptions and recordings.

I got these at a time when they were tough to find, but now you can find them easily on the internet.

Thanks Rhino,
I apologize that I should have mentioned that the rest of the band wants books that they can use. I actually have the 3 books you mentioned that you have (actually, 2 are on the way from Amazon).

Gotcha

It might be an idea to get the Standing in the Shadows of Motown and the Wattstax DVD's and and try to grab the performances. I have the "Standing...." DVD and think it's a good learning tool. Most the original guys are there.

I planning on getting Wattstax sometime.

The fakebook combined with original recordings will get you started...

There's also a book with chords in it (PVG - piano, vocal, guitar) which you could use to give you outlines....

MOTOWN ANTHOLOGY

http://www.amazon.com/Motown-Antholo...4616228&sr=1-1

Hope that helps.

There's also this from Hal Leonard - it's got sketch parts for all instruments for about 10 or 12 songs....

SOUL SET

I have the
  1. Gig Guide: Soul Set: includes 10 Songs, with Sheet music for a 5 piece ensemble, which is great for starting a 60's R&B revue
  2. Motown Bass Classics: includes 21 songs, but no "I was made to love"
  3. S
ignature Licks Motown Bass: includes 15 songs

All three have helped me tremendously. I got mine off Amazon in a package deal.

You guys are great. Thanks a bunch.

Coincidentally, my friend just gave me a copy of the deluxe version of the SITSOM CD that came with his DVD. Tons of remixed original Motown tracks minus the vocals. Oh, and look, it's got "I Was Made to Love Her" and the bass is clearer and it sounds like a black man's finger playing, not a white woman's pick as some people would like to believe. Go figure.
