Hey, I was sitting here trying to think of ways to write basslines and ideas and such, and I was confused about whether or not I would always have to follow our drummers kick pedal..like is that a necessity, or can I stray from that pattern from time to time?

You do not "always" need to follow the drummer's kick drum.
Depends on the song, what kinda fell, etc.

Sometimes, of course, you will want to lock it down so tight that it sounds like ONE person playing...other times, you may want it a bit "looser" or you may want to 'play in the cracks' or you may want to play in the backbeat, etc.
