Music School Questions

I posted this in the Misc. forum and got no responses, so im trying here.

I am wondering if someone who barely gets by on a college institutions jazz audition and gets accepted, would be at the proper skill level to not be struggling with the workload?

Maybe someone has a personal story?

I also am interested in hearing about how much you take away from a 4 year institution. Being relatively new (2 years), that person would be well versed compared to when he began. But how much more? Could this man, assuming the gig was available, do studio work?

I understand many of these answers cannot be answered exactly because of individuals learning levels, talent, etc. Im looking for a broad answer, so to speak.

Thanks!

I can wholeheartedly say yes to both questions. I got into Berklee College of Music by the skin of my teeth and yes it is challenging but yes I can handle and I wouldnt want it any other way. To answer your second question, before I went to berklee I thought that I had become stale and tapped out my potential but it was just the opposite. I had just begun, I have dramatically gotten better, well beyond where i could have gotten by myself.

I think it depends on where you go. Certain schools will accept anyone willing to pay 16,000 a semester and they have no problem teaching you how to read whole notes. Certain schools will accept anyone, but they will weed out 3 out of 4 people after a year. Others are far more selective.

I can tell you one thing. Going into a college music program unprepared and lacking confidence (or even being OVER confident) is not gonna be fun. You may still succeed, but it can be a hard road to travel.
