My dilemma

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing bass for a few months now, and my skill has gotten to the point where I need to take lessons professionally. I have no job, and no means of somebody paying for lessons for me. My school has auditions for scholarships, but I'm not sure if I can meet the criteria. I need to know all major scales, and sight read a single piece. I have almost no knowledge of reading bass music and playing it, and I only know some scales.

My question is, how do I go about learning this basic knowledge?

Also, I have a very limited time span to practice and work on my ability, so recommending practice is a given.

buy a used method book and practice reading.....there is enough info on line and the tab forum guys here are usually great about supplying dots for practice.....

learn your chord tones....there are lots of threads here, and imho it is better to work them out on your own......the scale tones will be apparent as you work through the chord tones......start with Emaj,F#min,G# min,in other words all the triads of E major, then add the sevenths, ninths, the rest of the diatonic keys, the diminished,pentatinics........etc.....there's a good six months/year work right there and you can work on that while saving for a good teacher....avoid any teacher that wants to show you songs/tab and find one that will teach you music....

I bet your public library will have Bass Guitar for Dummies. If they do not I bet they could get a copy from another library. Libraries do this all the time - usually no charge to you. Ask at the front desk. Get it and start on page 1.

While there get a book on how to read standard notation.

www.studybass.com is a friend.

Good luck.

+1

Also look at http://playbassnow.com. MarlowDK is pretty good.

I really like Paul Wolfe's ideas on learning bass. He teaches songs, which most of us like learning, so we can play along with CDs or jam with friends. Initially, that sounded to me like I wouldn't get theory, technique, etc. As it turns out, he uses songs to illustrate these concepts...kinda sneaking the boring (but important) stuff in with the songs. Check out his site at http://www.how-to-play-bass.com.
