I am a high school music teacher and this is a part of the curriculum. Do you own a piano or keyboard? A strategy that works with many students is to identify intervals in the context of a piece of music. A major sixth for example: the first two notes of "Days of Wine and Roses". Give it a try and see if this helps.

And then back to where Master Fuqua was going: sing, sing, sing.

Identifying songs with similar tones will help, but really, eventually you will have to get past it as it is too slow (though perfectly fine in the beginning). The only way to get over the problem you have is to practice constantly and sing every note. Teoria is good, but you need to be singing along with it.

You can't hear it until you can sing it without aid.

You can use popular songs to help identify intervals:

major 6ths - first two notes of the old NBC three note logo chime
first two notes of 'the days of wine and roses'

minor 6th - theme from 'love story'

p4 - 'here comes the bride'

etc
etc
etc

One I've always used for M6 is the first two notes of My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.

+1 to singing intervals.

A nice milestone is to sing the chromatic scale slowly and clearly, full voice, up and down, falling back to the root between the steps:

C - c# - C - d - C - d# etc.
and
C - c' - C - b - C- bb etc.

After that: at random, like C - e - C - f# - C - bb

Step-ups to these exercise:
C - g - C - f - C
C - e - C - a - C
C - d -C -e - C -f -C -g - C - a - C - b - C - c'

Play the root note C on your bass, sing the interval, play it to check it.

Sing everything.

And for min7, I just take the top note, and go up a tone. If it's a major 2nd from the root, it's a Minor 7th.

It's from the musical West Side Story.

Besides the initial minor 7th, there are many nice intervals to check out in this song.

Jesus. It's freaking called SOMEWHERE, which is in the freaking post Chris K gave you and if you freaking type SOMEWHERE A PLACE FOR US and WEST SIDE STORY into freaking Google, what do you think comes up? Let me know if you need someone to press on your chest so you can exhale.
Ahem.

Anyway, rather than trying to spend a lot of time finding songs that you can remember to see if they sound like what you think something sounds like, this set of exercises has been very useful.
