Learning melodies is great advice as is Pat Metheny's chord tone thing.Sometimes by limiting your choices it forces you to thing in ways you normally wouldn't.I didn't notice anyone mentioning singers.Listening to great singers like Sinatra,(Jaco was a big fan by the way)could give you ideas on playing around with phrasing,as would singing along and using your breathing as phrasing ideas also.Soloing is more than notes.

Here's a good example of embellishing the melody solo by Entwise (solo is at 4:50).
