Need lots of help with tapping-hammer ons

So recently i've signed up to play a solo instrumental at a concert, and the song I chose has a bit of a open-string+hammer on groove. I'm cool with all that, but when I hit the open string and tap (hammer on) the note I want, I don't get a clear sound.

instead of a nice E then a tapped note, my tapped note is not clean, but a mixture of two notes.

I'm sorry if you cant understand this, but does anyone know how I can stop it happening?
