My biggest problem with bass is, for me, it's not any fun. Do you guys have any dark/melodic bass lines that are pretty fun? Something like this: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/...erfly_btab.htm
etc.
Thanks in advance. |

Check out some theory or lesson and explore where it takes you. Take a tune you know already and decide you are going to master it, perfect time, feel, technique, tone, perfection in playing. If that doesn't lit the fire then you have other questions to be asking yourself.

Sorry. | cmon that sounds a little harsh. this is a totally legitamate concern, that im sure all instrumentalists have to deal with to at least some degree. heres the three things that i do to get myself out of a slump:
1.) discover new music. its obvious that practice gets boring when you're always playing the same genre. find out more about a type of music you havent had much experience with, and then find out how bass fits into the picture.
2.) learn non-bass music. learn some lines from other instruments. take the time to transpose and dictate. jazz and baroque are good places to start.
3.) come back to something you know well. what musician/style was a motivating force for you earlier? for me, listening to some jaco always gets me back into practicing. |

| | | | Try something completely different, like a Bach cello sonata. It'll remind you of how beautiful the bass can sound and how versatile it is. imo Bach brings good luck. He helped me after I got the fingers of my left hand working again.

If bass is not fun for you, why play it - it's not for everyone. Not to mention that that is the "biggest" problem, so then there are the smaller ones, whatever they are.
If on the other hand you a just "in a rut" then try some of the other ideas mentioned already. |

| | | | Where are you finding your Bach tabs? I'd love to play some of that stuff on my 6 string.
My Friend Of Misery is pretty dark/beautiful and takes 5 seconds to learn. |

For a lot of the genre (which I personally love and play) the standard basslines are extremely simple and boring. Whatever band you are currently into, learn some of the melodies (i.e. traditional guitar parts). Also, don't be afraid to spice up a bassline now and then. |

I've been listening to them alot lately. Whole band is tits. For the first album Muhammad wrote the whole thing, so he's now basically my hero. Drop A FTW! Doesn't sound more bad ass than that. |

The Bass seems to make the song.
BTTT If it's no fun, then my best advice is to take a break for a while. You should WANT to play, not feel that you HAVE to play.
I got to a point where I was leaving my family on Christmas Day to go and practice scales, and would feel guilty if I didn't practice every day. Don't want to be like that any more (the bad old six string days...) |

It'll give you something different to try (and maybe get excited about) and then you'll be able to better judge if you want to come back to bass. Plus learning a bit on another perspective is a great asset to yourself in terms of developing as a musician. Its helped me tons, I am primarily a bass player but also try out just about anything else I can get my hands on as my time allows.
David.
