I've been looking for a teacher in Oklahoma city and have not found the right one yet. So ive been doing the best I can to teach myself with out too many bad habits that I have to break later. I've got a few books but the main thing is studybass.com (awesome). I got a decent technique with the right hand. I'm getting away from the tabs kinda. The main prob is learning the notes on the fret board. I used to play sax and contrabass clarinet in what seems like a past life so after a week or two the reading part started to comeback. But I stumble finding the notes on the board. I understand the steps but I was wondering if there where any tricks or exercises to help with this part of memory?

I don't think there are any tricks or shortcuts, I think you just have to play a lot and be conscientious of what you're doing. An exercise you might want to try would be to find three or four different ways to finger the same basslines you are learning would be my advice.

If you havent already, ask for a bass instructor at Grannies Music Mall on I-40 and Macarthur

If you have been frequenting places like studybass and going all the way through books, you're definitaly taking all the right steps.
