New Bassist Joined Band, Needs Help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I just joined a band that was in dire need of a bassist with a firm grasp of music theory and a decent singer.

I fit this qualification, except that I've only really played bass for a while. I'm comfortable playing, I know how to read notes (I've played piano as well as trombone (bass and tenor) for years), and I know how to play the instrument. The problem is knowing how to get around on the instrument (i.e., workbooks).

Any ideas guys?

P.S. I'm new. Hi.

Welcome to TalkBass! It's a great community here. Alot of older people who know what they're talking about, so young guys like you and I (I'm assuming you're under 20) can probably soak up alot of knowledge. I know I've learnt alot.

Anyway, the problem with bands is that everyone's pretty much gotta be on the same page. The band I'm in is really going nowhere because I'm into like progressive sort of stuff, although I'm not too great of a bassist anyway, and then my lead gutairist is a big fan of Steve Vai, so he shreds alot (and he's really good, I might add). Then my rhythem guitarist is into punk/hardcore, and the stuff he comes up with is a bit weird. So we can never agree on anything.

The point is, you all have to be able to work well together. So I'd say first pick a rather easy song that you all can learn, play it and work on it, so that way you can figure out how to work together and how everyone plays. Then move on to more difficult stuff, then eventually you can use your own material. Or you COULD jam, but I don't think that helps too much. I mean, you and your guitarist my click with something, but then the drummer might be somewhere else.

Welcome to TB!

A couple of things that might help...
1. Learn where the notes on the fretboard are (at least on the E and A string, to start).
2. Remember that the bass is part of the rhythm section. Playing a rhythm that supports the song (even if it's just root notes) is more important than playing a creative melodic line.
