I just bought my 10 year old daughter a bass guitar for her birthday. Can anyone recommend a good course of action (book, DVD, lessons...) to get her started? So far, we got her a book and DVD that covers the basics, and we are working on a simple song together as a family (mom on drums, me on guitar and her on bass).

Neither me nor mom plays bass...
Any suggestions?

Get her some lessons. Next to having a gig, nothing is more motivational to play than a good teacher.

+1 on the lessons. Very cool that you have a "Family Band" going! Having some people to jam with will motivate her to practice and will will help her get better FAST! Sounds fun!

I agree with the lesson motivation.First of all,you get another way of looking at the bass, handling, fingering etc. Secondly, you can LEARN way more from an individual than a book.

My sons think I have some kind of "thing" for Carol Kaye, even though she is as old as my mother, (I'm 50!), but Carol has taught me so much about playing bass that whenever I see posts about newbees looking for materials to use I always have to recommend Carol Kaye. Go to www.carolkaye.com and go to her catalog. Get her Bass Course and DVD and you will be on your way to developing a great bass foundation. Her materials are inexpensive and if you join her forum, free, you can ask her questions directly and she will usually respond within a day. Heck, you can even e-mail her and she will get back to you within a day. Not too shabby having one of the world's greatest studio bassists e-mailing you directly to answer your questions, huh! But, do it soon because she is getting up there in age! Ya' know what I mean! She also lists teachers in your area that utilize her methods. I have not done that, but for a beginner it would be cool to have a Carol Kaye instructor work one on one with you! (I've been playing for over 30 years! Darn, I'm an old fart!!!)
Good luck and Merry Christmas,
Johnny StingRay
