Newb Questions on muting

Hi,

I've just started learning bass "for real" I noodled around a bit in college 10 years ago or so, but now I am really trying to learn, unfortunately all my previous noodling did was give me a bunch of bad habits. I live in a fairly rural part of the midwest, and there aren't any bass players giving lessons nearby, so I am having to go it alone, but I was hoping to get some help with some basic questions that I couldnt find answered in any threads. (if they have been answered and I didnt see it I apologize)

I am playing a MiM J Bass, which I love, but compared to the other basses I have played on it's very "talkative" I keep having all these harmonics jump out all over the place, sometimes it seems that if I pluck a string and let it ring, it will develop what sounds like a harmonic ringing out on top of the note that I played. Could this be something in the bass itself, or is it more likely something I am doing wrong? Also it seems like wherever I put my thumb across the lower strings to mute them I end up generating harmonics there as well.

If I roll the tone all the way off, everything is a lot quieter, but I dont want to just cover up mistakes I am making now, I want to actually fix them, any thoughts?
