I like 70s rock, 80s metal, thrash, death, and black metal. What song would you guys recommend? Are there any really good threads I should read on this site asap? |
when I was in your shoes, my holy grail of songs was 'The Real Me' by the Who... (not the version off the original Quadrophenia album, but the one from the Quadrophenia movie soundtrack with the re-recorded (even louder and gnarlier) bass...)
I thought that if I could learn to play that song, i'd be able to play virtually anything

so I plugged away learning a little bit more each time until I could finally play it... I soon realised there was more to bass playing than just learning to churn out 'The Real Me' parrot fashion (and the job of 'being John Entwistle' wasn't due to become vacant for another couple of decades), but it WAS an important milestone, and one I was proud of...
so don't let anyone on this thread tell you that you should forget about aiming to play 'one decently hard song by christmas' and concentrate instead on learning fundamental music theory.. because you need to do
both together.. learn the theory and witness it in action on some real life examples that excite you... my 'Real Me' experience was a masterclass in using C pentatonic minor & C Blues.. far more illustrative than just reading it in a book
with your name being zephead, I reckon some songs off Zep II would be interesting to have a go at... maybe try 'Living Loving Maid', 'Ramble On' or even attempt 'The Lemon Song'.. as you've probably found, the bass is also really loud on that album, so it's a perfect 'classic rock' bass tutorial...
best o' luck!
