| I used Bass for Dummies for a while. Solid book for the basics and to get your started. There are loads of DVDs out there, you should be able to wander into a shop and find one that's designed for beginners.
I really wouldn't sweat who it's by, the basics are pretty much the same across the board, the biggest difference will be how they teach you to apply them, and what exercises they may recommend.
Oh, check Youtube, there are dozens of bass playing tutorials.
Also, in regards to DVDs, I've heard good things about Victor Wooten's.
