Norm Stockton Videos

I am interested in the Norm Stockton videos, but I do not want to waste my money on stuff I know or already have down.

I have gone part way throught Todd Johnsosn's videos on walking. Excellent stuff! It opened up a new world for me. I am looking for more of the tasty licks (not really solo) more so than quarter note walking. The quarter note walking is great for jazz, but not as much for rock/worship that I am pretty much playing. I can apply the principals to other rhythms mind you.

I am looking to get better at sliding up the fret board and inserting a tasty fill between phraises, complementing the melody and in general adding some sparlke and finishing touch to the music. Not flashy or showy, just musically tasty. I have noticed Norm has some stuff that is kind of oriented that way.

I am thinking that "Grooving for Heaven 2" or "The Art of the Groove" may be the ticket. Can anyone shed an opinion on these 2?

In my opinon, yes! Also, John Patitucci's DVD is the ticket. You should also check out Adam Nitti's clinic at Bass Player Live 2006. Here's the link:

Let me just say the the whole Norm series is just awsome! If your past the basics, then I would say check out Volume 2, Volume 3 "Taking your Drum Bass relationship to another Level" and Volume 4. Volume 4 really gets into the spice factors, slap, tapping, chords, and implementing the techniques all over the board and combining these. Volume 3 really works on groove relationship with the drummer and volume 2 is more advanced in the theory end than volume 1. There may be parts of all the series from a technical aspect that again, you may be past but the light that Norm shedds on different subjects and just his way of approaching things is worth the cost of the series. But I also agree with the John Pattitucci comment, a great video too!

You are right about Norm's videos-I have all 4 DVDs. Well worth the time and money!

+1 on previous comments on Norm's series. I have also taken several of his courses available through www.musicdojo.com and highly recommend those. They mirror the DVD content but go into much more detail. Musical Genres were especially well covered.

Oh, I would also get the chart book that Norm offers. It has music (and tab) for nearly everything on his videos, and is a great reference. It also has drum transcriptions to help illustrate certain rhythmic concepts.

I just watched Norm tonight playing with Lincoln Brewster. Absolutely agree he is a bass players bass player. All that technique but he is all about the song. Very down to earth in person too. You can't help but love the guy.

I didn't buy any DVDs but I did pick up his CD: "Pondering the Sushi". Nice jazz CD.
