| | | | I dunno, man. From the videos, I can't really tell how you play bass at all. You seem to be wanting to solo melodies, which isn't exactly the primary role of a bassplayer. Put some music on, or at least a drum track, and work on your groove. I get the feeling you're going for the Boolean algebra before you've mastered fractions--so judging yourself at this point doesn't make sense. Find a teacher; get some books/CDs (the Dummies bass book is a good start); find some kids to play with--and after a year or two, re-evaluate. Oh, and have fun with it--you've got lots of time to grow. |

Ask the others what the problems are and work on them. Everyone learns at different rates, but once you get a strong foundation then the rate will accelerate. If playing bass and being a musician is in your heart, take the critism, yes it hurts, but use it to get better. It dedication and persistence that are required.

You just can't pick up a bass and expect to sound great in a couple of months. We all used to sound like that, (even Jaco or Flea) I'm sure... so just work through it, you'll get it. |

But seriously, don't be too hard on yourself and don't expect miracles. Take lessons and get a metronome or a drum machine to play with. Good luck! |

Honestly, I'd rather hear you play that Stan groove all day before I'd ask for Mario or Fur Elise. You've got work to do on your techinique, but don't play anything if you're not playing in time, with rhythm, intensity, and meaning. Scales, exercises, Mario, or Stan. Everything...because when you play with confidence, and authority, you'll play better and sound better.

| | | | Obviously you are musical. There is a bit of a walking line here, a little bit of melody there. You're hearing things but you don't know how to get to them yet. From what I could see you appear to want to use your hands correctly but you don't know how. As far as time goes, a metronome can be your best practice pal. But again, while your meter is a bit casual you appear to be paying attention to it. What most guys are hearing as poor time is your brain searching for the next thing to play.
The key is to find a teacher who can teach you both technique and music. If you do that and practice a lot there will be no stopping you. If you want it, that is.
Go get 'em, kid. |

| | | | First of all, don't let anybody tell you that you suck. Just keep practicing. If you can, get a teacher. You will grow so much faster.
Now, I have a question for you. I do not want to offend you, so please do not take this the wrong way. Why do you video yourself playing and post it on you tube? I've seen a lot of beginner level kids that do this these days, and I don't understand what the purpose is. This just may be the first sign of me getting really old - I don't understand "you kids" - but, can you tell me why you post these clips on the web? |

as for the whole learning melodies (someone mentioned earlier), Im all about it. thats how i started. i love making melodies, but i still know my place in the pocket. my advice, be as musical as you want/can be, but make sure you can lay down a groove.

| | | | The reason I comment on that is because, as we all know, people on the internet can be very judgmental and often times down right rude. I hate to say it, but I imagine that unless you are a top level professional, anytime you post anything on the web, somebody will come along and say "You suck" or some other rude and discouraging remark. (yer da suxorz - u shud quite cuz you r st00pid!!!!!1!) In fact, people on the web make comments like that about top level pros if they are not into the style. |

I actually quite like that main little groove on the first clip. Not half bad for a basic practice riff. It shows you have a decent sense of rhythm for a guy playing alone in a room, too, and a lot of musicians who have been playing for years can't say that much. Especially if those musicians happen to be guitarists. Ha!
Anyway, if you can't find some other people to jam with, do as someone else here suggested and get a little beat box and practice that more groove oriented stuff over and over. If you work at it, it'll come together. Don't sweat it.
Matt

The difference b/w you and someone that plays better is X number of hours of practice. There's nothing magical about it. It's just hard work and persistence. Keep at it. Listen to some R&B music (even if you don't particulary like it right now) b/c it will get you playing grooving bass lines.
But most importantly, try to get a good teacher. |

just keep at it... if you have the passion to do it, everything will fall into place... guaranteed
and remember you don't have to be a virtuoso to express yourself and make a statement with your instrument... you can do that right now... some of the greatest musical entertainment ever was made by musicians who suck...
