Original vs. Covers

I've played for 6+ yrs, and i have virtually no trouble figuring out songs for myself by ear. The problem, however, is that i don't really do a good job at making up my own lines. I feel kind of fake, since when i'm playing, i mostly play stuff that is already written by other bands. How can i break away and start coming up with stuff for myself? Does anyone else have this problem?

excellent question.....I am kind of in the same boat too.....I play trumept and improv is a very big thing for me.....Abersold books have helped me alot in improv and soloing...any bass studies that would offer the same out there?.....obviously reading music and having a good ear is beneficial which I am sure you have. sit down and write a song and see where it takes you.
