it's more important to know about chords than to be able to knock out a few nice sounding chord tricks on the bass... so learn the theory, and use it to derive the shapes... you'll be a lot better player that way than simply learning where your fingers go

learn chord theory, and use that knowledge to work out how to play arpeggios all over the neck... the chords are just derived from those arpeggios

for 3-note bass chords, you'll often phrase the root on one string, the 3rd on the string above, and the 7th on the string above that... so the first step would probably be to learn what the shapes of minor7, major7 and dominant 7 chords look like, and start putting together some simple diatonic chord sequences...

then look at incorporating open strings, double stops and other chord shapes... based on your theory

Jonas Helborg has a picture chord book - it's exactly what you're looking for.

It's on amazon for the really really good price of about $7 USD

make music first.

there's plenty of time to crush the creative urge with layers of "stuff" later.

This site is what you are looking for.
Just input your bass specs (number of strings, number of frets, tuning) and it will show you all of the notes, chords, scales and harmonics.

Thanks for this. As a recent 5-string convert, it really simplifies scale practice. No more scribbling on notebook paper.
