Playing along with CD but listening through h/phones

What the best and CHEAPEST way to listen to a recording say on CD and play along with it BUT listening to both through my headphones.

I have got a old mixer I used to use in my DJing days. Its a mixer which use with decks if that helps. I've tried running my bass through the microphone input and getting some leads that go from microphone input to red and white outputs (sorry cant remember the correct terms so I'll just explain what they look like) but cant seem to hear either. Whould i have to use a studio type mixer to give my bass more power for the DJ mixer to hear it so to speak (my bass is passive).

Would the cheapest option be to buy a programe for my Laptop which will be able to do this?

Sounds like you might have an old mixer. I use one of these and it works like a charm. I plug my bass right into the mixer and push the guitar button to the impedance matches and I lug an Ipod into the tape input, but you could also use a CD player or anything with RCA plugs. This one is a little more than say a Beringer, but it is higher quality and the guitar impedance button eliminates the need for a bass preamp to get a decent tone. The other thing I like is the main outs can go to a powered speaker which you can turn all the way down and still hear through the headphones. The Beringer's headphone jack volume goes down when you turn the main volume down.

Does you mixer have a head phone jack? if so you should be able to plug in your bass into one of the inputs and your CD player into the other.

Small mixer

Something like this small mixer would probably be best. Its already got 1/4" inputs, XLR input, RCA inputs, headphones out, etc. You could EQ & volume-adjust each channel as needed, etc.

hey, if you have a computer, you can just use it. That's how I practice, I take a video of the guitarist playing the song, play it on my computer and run my bass through a B1 zoom then into the computer, then out to my headphones from the computer, or to my stereo, it all works quite well. The key is the preamp, unless your bass is active.

Just a word of caution (FWIW): I've picked up a mild case of tinnitus doing exactly what you're planning so these days I rather practice without headphones, come what may. So if you do it, be really careful not to push the volume too high.
