Playing bass with a ring?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hope this wasn't posted before, but I couldn't find anything on it.

I wanted to ask if it is possible to play bass with a ring on your finger? I know guitarists can get away with it, but not sure about bassists. What is the best hand/finger to put it on?

Thanks !

Only my wedding ring these days, but I used to wear other rings, on various fingers of both hands. Never caused me too much of a problem except some wear on the bottom of the neck for left-hand rings.

Well...I wear my wedding ring while playing and it does not bother me. It is getting scratched from hitting frets every now and then but my wife would kill me if I took it off lol.

Have not tried wearing a ring on my right hand but as long as it wasn't super heavy I don't think there'd be a problem.

You don't have a ring to wear and see for yourself?

Yay! A fellow Canadian ! I'm not a married man yet haha, so just flashy things with no meaning. Thanks for the advice!

Wear on the neck, you mean the bass right? How about the rings themselves? I'm most worried about the 12 on right hand and the 1234s on the left hand.

I was mostly referring to wear on the bass neck, but my wedding ring has a separate band in the middle in a braid, and it actually got worn to the point that it needed to be repaired once (the jeweler did so at no charge - good people). It has lasted for quite a few years since then, and I'm playing more now than ever.

I always wear my wedding ring when I play. I have found that it helps protect me from the onslaught of wayward women in the audience. They seem to behave themselves better when I wear my ring and they don't mall me nearly as much. Back when I didn't wear a wedding ring, chicks would always be hanging all over me before the gig, during breaks, and after the gig. It's as if all they wanted was one thing (you know what I'm talkin about).

Actually... I don't have my own ring sadly haha, never owned one in my life (currently 18). I have set my eyes on this bad assery of a ring though http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vf12lezwt-...Ring_Large.jpg

Thanks for the answers guys ! I'm pretty new to the bass forums, but I'm pretty grateful to know all you bassists!

It adds weight to my right hand and makes playing uncomfortable. Left, I start feeling my fingers brush against it and it annoys the hell outta me so I either wear it around my neck or keep it at home.

I have a simple generic comfort band style wedding ring which sits nicely in the groove it has worn round my finger. I have no issues with it whatsoever.

But I've seen guys whose ego and bad taste forced them to have a huge monstrosity of decorated metal to represent their undying debt to their spouse. Needless to say, they have issues. (with it and playing guitar as well)

Before I picked up bass a scant few months back I wore three rings: my wedding band on my left ring finger, a ring on my left index finger, and my engagement ring on my right ring finger.

I tried for a week to make playing with them work. The wedding band mostly stays out of the way but the other two were constant nuisances. I ditched them. I figured that being this new to bass I didn't need the distraction of trying to learn to play AND learning to compensate for my jewelry.

I can't wear rings on my left hand. They scratch the neck. I even wear my wedding ring on my right hand.

I'm getting married next Summer, so I'll be wearing a wedding band. My wedding band is made of Cobalt, which I'm told is much more scratch-resistant than white gold. That being said, I'm sure it will be an adjustment at first, but she's worth it

Sorry if I got too lovey-dovey. Point is, if you play with a ring on often enough, you'll get used to it.

I take my wedding ring off when I play. Heck I take my wedding ring off whenever I go to the bar!

When I got married I wondered if my ring would affect my playing, but it never was an issue.

I can't really afford for it to be an issue, anyway; my wife comes to almost all my gigs! The ring's not going anywhere!

Got married last year. I figured the frets would inevitable scratch the ring if I'd wear it left so I chose to wear the ring on my right hand from day one for this very reason.
