Playing Doo Wop music

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I am planning on Auditioning at Busch Gardens theme park for their "Rock-a-Doo-Wop" Show and I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips or examples of Doo Wop Bass Lines. And maybe even a good song to audition with. Any and all Feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Looks like the ole ice cream progression I-vi-IV V was the favorite. Check this out. </title> </head> <body bgcolor="#ffffff" text="#000000" link="#000000" alink="#0000ff" vlink="#000000"> <basefont size="3"> <div align="center"> <HTML> <HEAD> <TITLE> Doo-Wop Progressions

That progression was used in the songs played in the old ice cream soda shops of the 50's and 60's. My first reaction was that Doo-Wop would be a basic I IV V taken from early rock. Looks like it was with the vi added.

I'd think a basic root or R-5 would do the trick. More thought - double bass sound with some chromatic runs.

Good information and good examples listed above. I play a lot of this music. Find recordings of all vocal groups and listen to what the bass singer does in terms of a bass line. A little more than just R and 5... the singers (bass singers) had a good sense of passing tones and contour. Its great music if you don't force it. Just let it flow.

Simplicity in your playing and a medium tone, too emulating an upright if their looking for originality. Lots of spacing and the vocals need to be "first" over everything. Most oldies singers are not interested in hearing and feeling the Bass, rather the piano for their accompaniment. Tons of C/Am/F/G and the transpose. You may find yourself in horn keys also if again they are looking for that original sound. An oldies gig that features great vocals is a fun gig, I started back in the late fifties opening as a kids act, to the older teens band, to a regional pro band that opened for groups like the Exciters, Flamingos, Cadillacs etc. it was a great experience and taught me that the show element was one thing people understand and most of the time the musicianship will be overlooked unless your performing in a club or area that has knowledge of music. .........the Flamingos were incredible, still the best vocals I've ever heard!!!! Good luck. Doc

Listen to Blueberry Hill by Fats Domino for a cool, and typical, bass line.

Doowop doesn't get much better than this.

No doowop without the Moonglows. Inconceivable!

A great one by the Del Rios:

Here is maybe my all-time favorite. But I'm a Momma's boy. The Mad Lads:
