Playing a specific genre of music

I don't know how to do it. I can't do it on bass or guitar without accidentally stumbling across something that sounds good and of the same genre. If I'm in a band making stuff up then I wanna move my genre around but I can't play a specific genre. How do you play a specific genre and how can you make something up without just messing around? Sorry if I sound frustrated

No idea, but why is it important? Just play whatever sounds good to you, regardless of the genre.

It sounds like you don't know the elements of the style you're trying to play in. Maybe you should spend more time studying whatever genre you're interested in to get a better idea of the scales, chord progressions, and rhythms usually used.
