I have thought a lot about my carrier, in music specifically and have decided to go to collage. I would like to get my bachelors in music composition, music theory and jazz. I am going to go to community collage first so I can get my math, English, social studies and what have you out of the way so I can put 100% of my focus on musical studies. Is there any thing I can learn at home so when I go into collage I won't look like beginner? I know my modes of the major scale but that's it. So what now? I have a very low comprehension level when I am attempting to teach myself anything. Are their any scholarships I can get that will help significantly with my financial dilemma? Thank you all very much for your past help

Sincerely,
Garret Fry

Get a book on the history of music and listen to recording of everything that is mentioned. Everything.

Knowledge of theory and composition will mean so much more if you have a large aural experience. At music school its very easy to get into the books and think you're doing something worthwhile, but music is an aural art and it starts with listening. Every style of music going back to about 900 CE has its own distinct sound. All of it is valueable.

Talk to the counselor at the community college and at the university you will be attending later. They can advise you on what scholarships are available.

As to the specific courses you should be taking they too would be able to give you that information.

After talking to them you will have a better idea what you can be doing in your normal daily practice sessions. For starters do you read music now if not that will be a must. Then start your journey into music theory. I feel you can get started with this at home now IF you take it in steps. If you jump from one subject to another you will keep running into walls and going down dead end streets. As everything we do in music is based upon an understanding of the major scale and how it is developed I would recommend you go back and start over with this paper. http://www.ibreathemusic.com/forums/...ad.php?t=11975 Then go to post 13, 14 and 15 at this site http://www.jsguitarforum.com/forum/s...40#post1368040 for some charts you will find helpful.

Good luck.

Apply for financial aide. Dpending on your families income you may qualify. Any Maricopa County college will have a financial aide office. My kids get help including pell grants and usually have overages that are paid directly to them. Gilbert Chandler up at Gate Way has a financial aide office right up the road. Do that soon. Jan starts a new semester.
