Hello. I am in drastic need of some guidance. My father wants to begin playing electric bass. He briefly played electric guitar in the mid-sixties, but hasn't done anything musical since then. He is going to get an Ibanez beginner pack or a Fender P-Bass. I really want to get him some type of instructional DVD for christmas but I didn't know where to begin. I tried the search function and got overwhelmed with responses, but none seemed quite what I was looking for. His musical interest are electric blues and classic rock if that is applicable. Can anyone recomend a DVD for someone in that situation? I really appreciate any help you could lend.

Thank you in advance

Don't let the type of music he enjoys influence your decision. You have to learn the basics of playing bass before you plunge into actual playing of music, and pretty much all of the beginner's DVD's will do it. And most of them will have you playing blues changes somewhere along the line, so your father will like that.

Not a DVD, but he would enjoy the following:

http://www.amazon.com/Blues-Bass-Han...uthor_prod_0_2 (simple riffs so easy to play in no time)

http://www.amazon.com/Jump-Blues-Bas...f=cm_lmf_tit_4
(actual tunes that sound great)

My father is in his mid fifties and he started to play bass a couple of years ago...my experience with this is that the most effective way that he learned how to play was through one on one instruction. We also got a book and DVD instruction set but he found this frustrating.

Learning the individual notes on the fretboard was his biggest initial challenge. Putting stickers on the fretboard helped him alot with this.

whatever the age, you can get much enjoyment out of music.
