Power/Symphonic Metal - Speed = ??? Genre....

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm very fasicinated by melodic nature of the various Power and Symphonic metal bands , such as Angra , Dragonforce and Nightwish and such . Still , I find that the great factor that turns me off them after a while and why I cant go on listening to them time and again is the speed factor . The double bass drums and the shred guitar at insane levels really gets my brain to ache . I really start thinking to a point that these guys are making fantastic music, but this sort of music can be made without it needing to be over before I can gather my wits of what the guitarist is doing . In any case , is there any genre of music , which contains the melodicity of the above mentioned , but with a more slower , grounded feel like rock or along the lines of what sabbath used to operate on , only more melodic along the lines of nightwish....

You might look into bands like Sigh, Chthonic, and maybe !T.O.O.H!. They tend to be uptempo, but since they're not boring like those bands you mentioned, it's worth listening a little faster to hear them.

You might also give Ulver a look.

I know Ahab can't be too fast for you.

You might also look into bands like Isis, Star One, early Unexpect (their later albums have gone over the edge to madness. It's fast), and Russian Circles.

Look into the genre of Melodic Doom. I'm not familiar with the genre too much, but bands in this genre tend to fit that bill.

Although greatly influenced by Nightwish, Delain is somewhat less "hectic":

Possibly Marco(Nightwish) played bass on this recording:

Video vocal track is slightly different than the CD

Take a listen to Opeth. They do a lot of melodic death metal stuff, but also have tons of pure acoustic music. All of it is very melodic and absolutely amazing imo. Probably my favorite band...

Well I've heard of opeth a lot , so will check them out . I'm just kinda wary of growling vocals though , they give me a pain in the A.....

To get an idea of what I'm talking about : http://youtube.com/watch?v=d-fE-WfM66E

Edit : I checked Delain . God awesome . It's a perfect example of what I'm trying to get at this point . Almost like the speed of rock , but the melodicity of metal . No(or less) Double bass drumming , and more focus on slow , understandable composed melody . Thanks Johnny .

Firewind is similar to DragonForce, except that they don't have sexual fetishes for dragons and for the most part it is not too fast.

+1 for Firewind and Arcturus, maybe check out rhapsody of fire if you can handle the super nerdy D&D type metal

My friend is a huge fan of The ****ing Champs, you might want to check them out. I've heard them described as melodicish metal, and based on what I've heard from them there isn't any uber speed shredding.
