So I'm about to start practicing on a regular basis again. I know that consistency is key. I want to practice both fingerstyle and picking technique and I wonder what makes most sense:
1) practicing both techniques each day
2) one day fingerstyle, one day picking, etc
3) one week fingerstyle, one week picking
4) a couple of weeks fingerstyle, a couple of weeks picking
thanks in advance!
PS: please don't turn this into a pick vs fingers-thread. I'm determined to practice both. :)
I would personally practice both techniques each day. The more time in between that you take, the more the practice progress erodes.
Absolutely. Frequency of practice is more important than duration.
Yeah, even a short period of time on each is better than a long period, with a long period of off.
That makes sense, thanks guys!
So I'm off making a schedule... :bassist:
A little hint that made a big difference in my playing.
Practice at a slow tempo. If you make a mistake, go back and sort it out instead of repeatedly muddling through it. Make sure you have an absolutely clear picture mentally of what you want to do, then go to it. Don't speed up the tempo until you can play it flawlessly. Use a metronome if you are shakey on the timing.
I got this very useful information when I was taking college beginning piano. In the first lesson, the instructor pointed out my way of practicing was only making me memorize my errors.
Muscle memory is your friend. Treat it right.
Yeah that's one main thing that I intend to do: I'll relearn all of my band's songs from bottom up again. I play most of them pretty good but I'm aiming for perfect this time. :) Starting at maybe 60 bpm under the original tempo and then working up from there. Riff by riff if necessary (or even split some of those up). I'm also practicing the songs in d standard instead of dropped d.
