Practice Software Similar to Guitar Pro

I have been demoing Guitar Pro and so far I like it. I am wondering if there is anything out there that is similar and better than it before I buy it. I like the fact that I can pull in midi files and then play along with the score. I haven't figured out if it generates tab yet, so if anyone knows how to do that I would appreciate it.

there are some free alternatives liek powertab or tuxguitar but none of them are as good as guitarpro. guitarpro is very user friendly as well.

Yes it definitely does generate tab from midi files. TBH tab is pretty much a standard feature in any tablature or scoring programme. You will need to check the tab it generates it correct tho, as it can do a few odd things with fingering that would make some line very hard to play.

People used to favour powertab until the powers that be had a go at them for hosting an archive of tabs that infringed copyright and forced them to remove them. As a result a lot of people stopped using it and writing tab in it to share with others.

Guitar Pro doesn't host tabs on their own site, but it seems to have won the tab software war. I find Ultimate-guitar.com to be one of the best resources if you're looking for tabs, esp guitar pro format.

The sad thing here is though is that you tended to find the powertab files to be much more accurate, whereas the now more popular guitar pro format, you have to sift through a lot of crap to find an accurate tab.

The other problem I find is a lot of guitarists nail the guitar tab but the bass (and drums) are very much an after thought, mainly there for accompaniment, so very basic lines and often not correct.

I use Logic by Apple. It does everything Guitar Pro does and about 100x more.
I use it as a practice tool and play along with tunes I picked up off of the
Internet (typically in MIDI format). What I particularly like about playing
with Logic is that the score/tab scrolls so you're always centered on the
correct time in the music. Guitar Pro goes left to right, left to right, etc.,
until it gets to the bottom of the screen and you don't get to see the
note on the next screen until it is already playing.

Plus, Logic lets you record music and compose music with thousands of
great instruments and loops.

I do have to give Guitar Pro some praise, too. Where it really, really
excels is in the fact that there are tens of thousands of tunes created
for it. You can find tons of music for Guitar Pro. What I do is open
the Guitar Pro files and export them to MIDI files where I can read
the in with Logic.

Logic Express (all you'll probably ever need) is $199.
Logic Pro is $499.
