Practicing with drums

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all, I'd really like to practice with drums to work on pocket playing and grooving, but I don't have access to a drummer I can get a copy of Hammerhead drum machine, but I also don't have access to beat making skills Is there someplace I can get pre-made drum beats that I can play a long with, or would it be better to practice that as well and perhaps get a better sense of rhythm?

Try riffworks at http://www.sonomawireworks.com/

You can really get a lot of mileage out of that program and it has plenty of other features you can use.

I started using EZDrummer earlier this year. It's awesome. Just run that and my bass through Reaper and monitors. Don't even really use an amp at home anymore.

I got a forty dollar keyboard (well, I bought it for forty, it's actually worth about $300 new), and I just use the pre-sets on it to jam with when I can't hook up with my drummer.

Yeah, I play a little bass too. I could tell what you were doing there. You were playing some major and minor scales. I was watching your hands.

While there are places that you can get pre-programmed beats, personally, I think it's very valuable to learn to make your own beats. IMO, every bass player should either learn how to play drums (not to a pro level, but you should be able to play well enough to perform some simple songs) OR learn how to program a drum machine.

Just my 2 cents.

Just work out some drum beats. It'll improve your sense of rhythm.

Keep time with the hi-hat and snare, and beat our the rhythm on the bass drum. Add cymbals for accents.

Hmm, I figured that would be the response I would get lol. Guess it's time to dust of the old drum machine and make some beats.

what about a metronome?

I don't know if you prefer hearing a drum beat, but you can work on your groove with a metronome also. I am a drummer also. I use the metronome for practice on both drums and bass.

Metronome is great for working on timing (which is definitely something I need to work on) but I was more looking for something I can use to working on getting into and staying in the pocket. I have almost no experience with that.
