Practicing with software drum machine: ideas?
Happy New Year, folks!
I wish y'all health, happiness and underwater dancing without getting wet!
I'm revising my practice recently, and I'd like some ideas on rhythm and groove training.
I use a software drum (Hydrogen drums) with lots of possibilities (creating whole songs, changing tempo, etc).
I'd like to develop steady, precise, good subdivision feel, and eventually speed while still playing precisely
Say, I'm working on 2 or 4 bar funk line with 16th runs or tricky syncopation for 20 minutes.
What kind of exercise would you do to master the riff/rhythm?
I can program the drums to change as I wish all along as I play.
Set it to give you snare hit on 2 and 4 only, nothing else. Practice to that, because our job is to keep time ourselves. Use it to check your timekeeping, not to keep time for you.
I just use a metronome and leave it at that.
practice the 16th notes at a slower tempo for a few minutes, then ramp it up a couple notches and repeat until you are flying freddy fingers
