Preparing for an audition

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have an audition coming up with a potential new band which seems interesting to me right now. That's the good news, the bad news is they havn't sent me any material to learn, and no songs which they want me to play for them. So basically I'm gonna go in there and just meet them.

Here is my problem, they're probably going to ask me to play something, but without any reference to what, how am I supposed to know? Is this making sense? It's still kinda early.

So I guess my question is how would you guys prepare for an audition/interview if you didn't have any material to work with?

Thanks,
J

Do you have any way of knowing what kind of music they play? A Myspace, Facebook, or just a simple description. If you have something to work with, you can find songs to learn from that genre and prepare those.

If you have literally nothing, and they're not willing to tell you anything, I'd be a little wary of them.

They probably just want to play with you and see what you can come up with. They actually might not have any completely written material yet. Bring your ears and good taste. And good manners-- they'll probably size up your temperament.
OR... they're expecting you to play a solo bass piece, as though you were auditioning for Juilliard. I seriously doubt that!

They gave me an idea of what they want to play in the sense that they want to resemble (not mimic) bands such as Lacuna Coil and Nightwish (minus the metal vocals). Now it's not my favorite kind of music but its still not bad. I've checked their website and they don't have any completed material. I guess I just have to go in there and hope for the best.
