Always check how well it stays in tune!! Almost every electric guitar I've played in that price range CANNOT STAY in tune!! Also, if he likes metal, check how good the output on the humbuckers (or pups) is. Some guitars sound excellent unplugged, but once you plug them in, you realize the pups have horrible sound quality.

That's all I can think of now. If I remember anything else I'll post more.

IMHO how it fits him and how he feels about being seen playing it are more important than which brand to get. Not sure of the exchange rate, but with amp and all I think we are at entrance level, thus everybody makes an entrance level electric "kit" and they are all in competition with each other - so all offer about the same value. Pay your money and take your pick. If anything I'd point him to one with two humbuckers if that keeps within budget. Spend more on the guitar and scrimp on the amp. Fifteen watts will take him through garage band.

Again IMHO

He just gave me a call that somone is willing to sell him an Ibanez S470 for 200 Euros (297 Dollars). Seems to be a good price, if all is in order with it. Any objections? Or forever hold your peace^^ Thanks for your responces

I've not owned that particular guitar, but I have owned Ibanez in the past. They make good quality instruments, and I'd buy another if finances allowed at the moment.

Personally I think Ibanez are the blandest most soul-less guitars going, but they are popular for metal as they've got totally straight fretboards and are usually caked in distortion anyway so why not.

I think the budget range made by Yamaha - the Pacificas, are very good for the money. For that price you could probably get a really decent one.

PRS make some budget level guitars now (budget for PRS, still probably about £300 or so) and they are excellent - I would recommend those over an Ibanez.
