Question - Building Walking Bass Lines

Will we have a specific spot to list questions? At any rate here is my first.

I'm playing the CD that comes with the book on my computer using Windows Media Player. How can I lower the piano volume. I understand the CD is set up so you can set the left hand and right hand volume. I would like to play the CD in my computer. Using Windows Media Player is there a way to adjust the left hand and right hand volume?

Thanks.

Adjusting the balance is about all you can do. Maybe mess with the EQ a bit. I thought the drums could have been a bit louder but I guess it is what it is.

I'm going through the same book and ripped the CD to mp3s (with FreeRIP), import them to Audacity, split the stereo signal, delete the track with only bass and drums, turn the piano and drum track's volume up and turn it into mono. Feels a lot more intuitive than just panning the tracks to either left or right ear only.

Here are some pics if you're not familiar with the application:

Click on the small arrow pointing down and select "split stereo":

You can now adjust the volumes of individual channels or even remove one of them by pressing X on the top left corner:

You can then select "mono" from the menu mentioned before if you want the piano track to be played from both channels:

Lowering piano volume only is a tough cookie. You could try messing around with Audacity's equalizer but you'd probably lose a lot of the drums at the same time.

My way of practicing is to actually record what I play in Audacity. Quick way to do this is to just hit R to record, space to pause and alt+z to remove a botched attempt.

If you're going to do this, you should probably rip the CD to .wav instead of MP3. If you rip it to MP3, when you process the MP3 in Audacity, you'll be decoding the MP3 and then going through a second generation of compression and encoding when you save the file, which will degrade the audio.

Oh yes, definitely do this if you don't want the quality to suffer. I only throw the mp3s in Audacity and don't save the stuff I record when I practice (well, maybe rarely) but rather listen what I did right away and then close the app after the practice's over.

Do whatever suits you best.
