question on sound and playing

Sign in to disble this ad
Ive heard this video on youtube and I love the sound of this bass player. Im still trying to find my 'sound' in jazz and this vintage looking jazz bass has anything special to it to achieve this?

Somewhere the player mentions string (rotosound swing?) and it sounds to me like using a lot of bridge pickup and tone on the jazz bass.

Im trying to learn by transcribing at this point but would love to get suggestions for jazz players on how to get a sound like this.

Below is the video

(I hope i posted this in the correct thread)

Thank you

That sounds an awful lot like a fretless.

Agreed. Hard to tell, but looks like a defretted J ala Jaco. At a couple spots in the video the light flashes off the fingerboard like it has urethane or some other glossy coating on it.

Get out your butter knife

i have the following with round wounds on my jazz bass ( im usually playing with flats) ...
bridge -10, neck -0 and tone -0 and seem to get close by playing near the bridge and plucking a little harder like jaco ( or is it clucking).
thanks for the suggestions.

butter knife stays on pancakes (for now....)
