What is a decent and cheap drum machine that I can buy and really groove with to help me with my bass playing?

The Alesis SR-16 is a great little drum machine that my guitarist and I use to record with. Not sure if they still make that exact model though.

Look into hammerhead. It's free and works quite well. (In 4/4)

Rhythm Rascal

I've found Rhythm Rascal to be really easy to use. I use it to practice with because I find the ticks of most metronomes to be obnoxious.

I don't know anything about drums, but I just searched found some "standard" rock drum patterns that were easy to plug-in to Rhythm Rascal.

You can find roland machines for about $25..

Get something programmable.

I've had everything up to a Sequential Tom.. for practice it was a bit of overkill.

OR just mp3 record some drum track.. use this...

After getting old, I'm all about fewer things..

I do keep a drum machine in my rackmount drawer... it has helped a few times.

Timmy

Thanks for all the advice guys. I appreciate it. I am leaning more towards drum machines I can buy because I don't want to be sitting on front of a computer all the time.

The cheaper version of Propellerheads Reason has some great drum machine type stuff as well as a lot of other cool stuff. The full version is one of the coolest things ever.

My son's guitar teacher recommended to Alesis SR-16. They seem to range between $50-$80 on Craigslist and eBay. I need to get a new metronome first, then we'll pick up one of those. I too prefer not to sit in front of the 'puter when I practice.

I picked up an SR-16 for $40 and it does everything you could ever really need. Not all of the sounds are the best, but it's got all the features you could want.

Sounds cool...I am looking them up on ebay at the moment. Is that where you got yours?

I got mine from a friend, but you could probably find 'em cheap on the bay if you're patient.

You might be able to find one of the smaller Zoom ones on fleabay, keep an eye out for the old Boss Dr Rhythm units too.

Zoom, Boss and Alesis make them.
The upper-end Zoom and Alesis have bass sounds, which I know is what we play, but they're nice when you play **shhh**guitar.
I have the Zoom RT-223 and I really like it.
Everybody's right about finding them used. I see them all the time on craigs.
Good luck.

Couldn't your drum machine work as your metronome too? Why not just get the one?

I hate the beeps that most digital metronomes make and prefer to setup a more beat-like sound which you can do with the drum machine.

Agreed, the drum machine makes the best metronome for sure. You can kill two birds with one stone and sacrifice nothing, imho.
