Reading music + note/fret patterns

Hi guys, so I have been playing bass since 6th grade, but I stopped playing in the school band at 7th grade, and now I find myself in band again.

I used to be able to read music somewhat, but it all went out the window once I quit band.

So I am wanting to know if there are any quick patterns I can learn having to do with the notes distance on the bars from the closest open string and how many steps up from the open string you need to go to reach that note...

Like for a B since it is one note up from an open A I would go up 2 frets (2 frets = whole step, 1 fret = half step?)... Wait that rule doesnt work be cause a C is 1.5 steps up from A right?

But any one have some tricks like that... I would be trying to work out of my bass books to learn reading music right now but I got one bass at a luthier and another at school.

And for flat notes I play one fret below the normal note correct?
Sharp notes play one fret above normal note?

2 frets for a whole step, one for a half. However, since C is a half step from B, it does work.
