Does this work for you???
I am reading music at the bus every day and I am improving a lot..
My method
Standing in the shadows of motwn book
1- I count the subdivisions in my head while I tap the notes with my hand.
2- I read the rhithm while I see how the notes relate to each other, and imagine where they are.
3-I read the rhithm and try to hum the bass line.
4`-Ì try to remember similar patterns of different tunes and I mark them.

3 days per week I sight read with the bass some of this tunes with sincopation and simandl book

that's actually a great way to do it if it's inconvenient to have a bass in your hands.

Yeah man!! I chill on the couch all the time with drum books and tap out syncopated rhythms.... Not the end-all-be-all but I definitely find it useful.
