Really fun practice

Played for a couple of hours this morning and it was like night and day from yesterday. I was practicing scales and some basic finger exercises and I realized I was playing faster and smoother than yesterday. It was like my fingers were working better than they have been or something...hard to describe, but I like it! Man, I could get hooked on this stuff!

Well, seeing as how muscles have no memory cells, that's impossible, but I see where you're coming from. Whatever you want to call it, it was cool to see such a noticeable improvement from one day to the next.

It *is* a pretty cool phenomena(on? I always get them mixed up). If I have been sitting and really plugging and grinding away on lesson, I always play it better after a good nights sleep and coming back to it in AM.

Breaking my practice time into several 10-15 minute sessions over the course of a day or evening seems to work well too.

It always feels good to break through a plateau... I had an instructor tell me once " Plateaus are a good thing.. it means you're learning a bunch of things and working hard... then BAM it all comes together and makes musical sense" and thats where the gratification comes in. Feels good.

I'll give ya the 411 here. I graduated from UCF with a degree in Human Factors Psychology and Ergonomics. IT's called kinesthetic memory. The brain builds heuristics (common sets on information) to allow for less cognitive energy to be donated for muscle movement. This way we perform a task without thinking about it. Pretty cool indeed!
