Really want to learn.

I've been playing bass for about a year now and i love it but i really want to learn more music theory to help me be a better musician overall. I know a bit but i would really like to work my way out of the traditional bass role (hold down the bottom end at all times) and i think theory could help me with that. I love to jam and stuff but i'd really like to know exactly what i'm doing and how to make it better. Are there any books you can suggest? I have a tutor lined up and hopefully he'll push me along as well. My goal is to be the #1 bassist in the jazz band by the end of the year (don't really have a choice because the other one is a senior).

+1, and try to listen to and play as many musical styles as possible. IMHO I'd particularly stress jazz (obviously) and fusion, the latter especially since it and lessons were the two influences that introduced me to being more creative and constantly learning new chops and techniques. Most importantly though, just play as much as humanly possible.
