I've dropped my music major at school, and found a good local teacher not affiliated with my school. I'm trying to go more in my own direction and develop my own style...

I really want my personal style to be in the same vein as Stuart Zender. Very tasteful and funky... never too busy. Just in the pocket and keeping time a little more funky than straight 8ths or something. But also like Zender I wanna be able to drop a hot R&B lick in there and come out front every once in a while.

I have the Jamerson book and figured that would be a good starting point. Any other recommendations for this style?

You may want to check out Mike Hiland's Complete Funk Bass Book. Navigate to "contents" tab on page. Sound clips as well.

May be too beginner, but does have some great articles on note choice. Good insight into R&B.
About equal parts finger-style and slap. Hope this helps!

A book worth checking out: "Improve Your Groove" by Patrick Pfeiffer (published by Hal Leonard). It gives examples of different bass player's styles and tips on creation of grooves.
