Recommend me a DVD

I want to get a DVD that covers the stuff I was never formally trained on...which is pretty much everything. I thought I would start with something like this:
http://secure.nps1.net/guitarworld/i...products_id=80

Now I am not really a metal dude but I do play heavier music. Any thoughts? I want to improve as a player and feel like I can't do that without learning some of the basics.

My background, I have been playing for 14 years by ear. I have been in a handful of bands. I want to build my skills and have taught myself all that I can. I don't want to pay for lessons, a dvd would be cheaper.

Thanks TB!

the guitar world dvd is crap. i wouldn't waste money on anything like that. get something based in jazz concepts like roy's dvd series. if you're serious about getting better, stick with jazz teachings.

That looks really cool but I don't think I have that kind of money right now. I am still trying to raise money to finish up a diy cab. I am down to my last gear selling everything and only keeping what I think I need. (2 basses, amp, cab, guitar, recording device). I can understand that it is probably the best out there right now. Is this the holy grail of bass DVD's?

gear comes and goes, but music knowledge is forever......the lessons each contain enough to keep you busy for months.....

I haven't checked out Roy's DVD yet, but this is an excellent one, focuses on aspects that some take for granted, after many years of playing:

http://www.amazon.com/Victor-Wooten-.../dp/B001DPC4I2

I definitely walked away with a different point of view on this one, Vic makes alot of sense.

If you don't get anything out of this video, you didn't give it a chance, it went over your head or you have a severe learning handicap

I have Roy Vogt's DVD set. It will fill in everything you skipped and avoided.

I have been playing for many years, and play out every week. Years ago I took lessons, learned allot, but because of family and work serious practice suffered, I wasted my lessons.

Roy's DVD is filling in all those spots and weaknesses, and in my pace. Thanks to Roy, I am really learning how to read notation, and rhythms.

I am very happy with the course, and results

It's like 5 hours isn't it?

I may pick this one up for now and aim for the other one once I get some extra money.

The Vic Wooten one.
Roy's looks really comprehensive, I just don't have the scratch for it.

* On a side note, I'll be getting Roy's as soon as I can. It looks like everything I could ever want/need as far as instruction.

i don't know Roy's dvd, but I'm sure if you get both you'll have a lot of ground covered.

Good luck and let us know,

Sure will. Roy's DVD is actually a set of 10 DVD's. It's almost $200. It looks great but it will have to wait for a while. Meantime, I hink the Wooten DVD may be good to tide me over. Plus, I think it is 5 hours.

I recommend Tommy Shannon's bass DVD. He is a great fundamental player with over 40 years experience. The DVD covers all basic blues styles which are the building blocks of all popular music.

You can't build a house without a foundation.

much as i like and respect tommy, a blues instruction dvd just doesn't get it done like a jazz instruction dvd.

carol kaye's jazz dvd course is really good if you can't afford roy's yet.

I am doing Roys TMBG its great. Also, you dont have to pay it all upfront, they have a non interest three month payment plan. I think its about 64 bucks every month. Makes it easy, the course is worth far more then they charge.
